📰 News we're reading

1. Scottsdale Unified students named National Merit semifinalists (arizonadigitalfreepress.com) — Scottsdale families can celebrate that 19 Scottsdale Unified School District seniors have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, representing four local high schools. These students now move forward in a prestigious competition for scholarships totaling about $24 million, reflecting years of academic effort supported by local teachers and schools.

2. Scottsdale Airport adding direct flights to Cabo San Lucas (abc15.com) — Scottsdale Airport is launching direct JSX flights to Cabo San Lucas starting Oct. 8, with service expected to ramp up to daily by 2027. While many residents welcome the convenience, others are raising fresh concerns about growing jet noise, and the city is adding a third customs officer but has no plans for a new noise study.

3. Man, 80, accused of shooting door-to-door salesman who stopped to ask for water (hawaiinewsnow.com) — An 80-year-old man in a Scottsdale gated community is accused of shooting a door-to-door salesman who had stopped to ask for water, leaving the victim with a serious spinal injury. Scottsdale police say the suspect claimed self-defense, but investigators and a legal expert question that justification as the case moves forward and the victim remains hospitalized in stable condition.

4. Greater Phoenix home sales rise year to date as August slowdown follows seasonal pattern (arizonadigitalfreepress.com) — Scottsdale's housing market is outperforming much of Greater Phoenix this year, with closed home sales up 11.6% and the median price climbing to $1.25 million. Pending sales and new listings have dipped, and homes are taking a bit longer to sell, but overall activity remains stronger than many neighboring cities, giving local buyers and sellers important context heading into fall.

5. 2 SUSD board candidates drop out of chamber forum (yourvalley.net) — Scottsdale Unified voters should know that governing board candidates Amy Carney and Jeanne Beasley withdrew from a Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce forum after learning another campaign's volunteers widely shared the virtual event link. They say they believed it was meant as a chamber-focused event, while the forum itself allowed no audience interaction or questions.
