Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:
- Check out the May episode of Fast Five for a quick breakdown of the top five things happening in Scottsdale. This episode highlights the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park Summer Concerts Series, the Beat the Heat program, the Community Juneteenth Celebration scheduled for June 17, and hiking and heat safety. No. 1 on the Fast Five list is "Speak Up, Scottsdale," which is a new online community where Scottsdale residents can "discuss city issues, programs, services, and projects." Though it is still being developed and hasn't launched yet, residents can submit their email address "to be notified when the platform is ready." (City of Scottsdale)
- Scottsdale is seeking commission and board members. There is currently one opening on each of the following: Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee, Historic Preservation Commission, Library Board, and Tourism Development Commission. Residents interested in volunteering their time are encouraged to apply online by June 1. (East Valley Tribune)
- The Goldwater Institute sent a letter to Mayor David Ortega threatening litigation against the city if certain zoning regulation amendments for Old Town are approved, citing that the changes would "diminish property values for hundreds of property owners." The letter is in regard to the Old Town Character Area Plan, which divides Old Town into district areas called "types" and determines how tall buildings can be in those areas. The specific threat given was a "large number of Proposition 207 claims against the city," as Proposition 207 requires governments to "reimburse landowners when regulations lower an individual's property value." In response to the threat, city council will revisit portions of the plan prior to going on summer break on July 12. (NewsBreak)
