25 Tucson Artists Get The Boot From Warehouse For Road Project

The 25 artists working at Citizens Warehouse were aware of the Downtown Links road project, but didn't think they would have to move.

TUCSON, AZ — A Tucson artists' collective is getting the boot from a downtown building to make room for the new Downtown Links road project, the Arizona Daily Star Reported.

The 25 artists who work in the Citizens Warehouse at 44 W. Sixth Ave. were aware of the road project, but didn't think they would have to move out to accommodate construction. Construction crews need the parking lot at the building to stage equipment and to gain underground access for the project.

“We’ve known about the Downtown Links project for a long time, it’s been in the works for many years,” Alec Laughlin, one of the artists, told the Star. “Originally, the city told the tenants of Citizens Warehouse that when the construction does finally happen that we would be able to stay and not be evicted.”

The artists have until Aug. 31 to vacate the building. Laughlin told the newspaper he's already found a new space.

The building is owned by the Arizona Department of Transportation and leased to the city of Tucson.
