CA Fires 2020: 16,000 Firefighters Battle Fires; 60,000 Evacuated

Here is the latest information on the California wildfires burning as of Aug. 30. See also: an interactive map of the fire locations.

CALIFORNIA — Fire crews continued to see success in containing fires and maintaining control lines to suppress the 1.42 million acres collectively burning across the state Sunday. Many evacuation orders have been lifted or downgraded; however, 60,000 residents in the northern part of the state remain evacuated from the massive complex fires.

As fire crews began to make progress in containing over two dozen major fires burning across California, the National Weather Service warned of another warming trend arriving Sunday that could hamper suppression efforts. A Fire Weather Watch was issued for Sunday afternoon to Monday morning for north winds and dry heat.

Nearly 16,000 firefighters were battling the blazes, which had collectively destroyed 2,500 structures. There have been seven reported deaths associated with the wildfires.
