Lawmakers Want White Marsh Mall To Do Two Things For Safety

Should White Marsh Mall have a youth curfew policy? The Baltimore County Council has filed legislation pushing for its consideration.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — The Baltimore County Council has proposed a resolution that would require the White Marsh Mall to increase visible security and consider requiring adult supervision after 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The council plans to discuss and vote on the resolution in the coming weeks.

Councilwoman Cathy Bevins, Councilman David Marks and Councilman Todd Crandell proposed the piece of legislation at the council meeting this week. They cited the Aug. 4 mob at White Marsh Mall that led to nine arrests, including seven juveniles, and the deployment of more than 36 officers.

The resolution calls for the owners of the mall to "to immediately increase visible security and to evaluate implementation of a weekend parental guidance policy, all in an effort to ensure the safety of the young patrons as well as other patrons."

Lawmakers pointed to youth escort policies implemented at The Avenue at White Marsh in 2005 and Towson Town Center in 2016 that require those younger than 17 to be accompanied at all times by a parent or supervising adult age 21 or older on Friday and Saturday after 5 p.m.

The Baltimore County Council will discuss the resolution at a work session at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30. There will be a final reading and vote on the resolution at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5.
