📰 News we're reading

1. New Development Is Transforming the Victor Valley (livability.com) — Adelanto is in the midst of a major growth push, with a new CarMax reconditioning center bringing 225 jobs, a 130‑acre Adelanto Global Logistics Center, and about 800 homes planned in the next few years. Mayor Gabriel Reyes highlights road upgrades on key corridors and efforts to diversify beyond cannabis, while nearby Victor Valley cities also add warehouses, retail, hotels, and housing that will shape the broader regional economy.

2. Victor Valley Logistics Boom Is Reshaping the High Desert (livability.com) — Adelanto is aggressively rewriting its land-use plans to favor massive warehouses, positioning itself along Highway 395 as a frontier for new logistics investment. Tied to Amazon's huge new middle‑mile hub in nearby Hesperia, the broader Victor Valley is rapidly transforming desert land into a major jobs‑rich industrial corridor that could keep more local residents working closer to home.

3. Newsom signs immigration bills authored by Inland Empire state senators (kvcrnews.org) — New California laws taking effect Jan. 1, 2027 could directly affect Adelanto's ICE Processing Center by blocking local approval of new private detention facilities and tightening rules on immigration arrests near courthouses. Inland Empire senators say the measures respond to rising enforcement actions and concerns about private detention conditions, while local sheriffs and federal officials warn of legal conflicts and limited impact on deportations.

4. Internal ICE documents show pattern of medical failures before detainee deaths (sfchronicle.com) — Conditions at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in Adelanto come under sharp scrutiny after internal ICE mortality reviews, briefly posted online, showed medical care repeatedly fell below basic standards before detainee deaths, including that of Los Angeles resident Ismael Ayala‑Uribe. Investigators cited staff shortages, delayed responses to serious symptoms, and poor documentation, fueling calls from advocates and former officials for stronger oversight of the facility and ICE's wider detention system.

5. Memorial to day laborer Carlos Montoya vandalized days before pilgrims' Monrovia visit (pasadenastarnews.com) — Immigrant advocates and faith leaders tied to Adelanto's detention center quickly rebuilt a vandalized memorial in Monrovia honoring people who died in ICE custody, including two men who died in Adelanto. Their 96.5‑mile "Clear the Road to Freedom" pilgrimage, which began at Adelanto Detention Center, is spotlighting local deaths, calling for detention closures, and protesting current federal immigration policies.
