Chargers Look to Light Up the Scoreboard - Again

Agoura High has averaged 37 points a game against Marmonte League rival Simi Valley over the past six seasons. They meet again on Thursday, with the Chargers looking for a 2-0 start to the season.

The Agoura High football team won only two Marmonte League games last year. One of them was against Simi Valley, the Chargers routing the Pioneers 30-7 with quarterback Gerard Poutier rushing for two touchdowns and throwing for another.

Poutier gained 23 yards on the ground and threw for 167 yards. His touchdown pass went to Corey Da Silva, who caught three passes for 55 yards. Frank Schmidt was the leading rusher for the Chargers, gaining 79 yards on 13 carries, and scored a touchdown.

Agoura is 5-1 against Simi Valley in their past six meetings and the Chargers have scored an average of 37 points in those games.

The teams meet again on Thursday at Agoura in the league opener, and Agoura coach Charlie Wegher said he is expecting a "much-improved" Simi Valley team.

"They've got some athletes. They've got some size," Wegher said. "They've had two weeks to prepare. I'm sure it's going to be a tough football game."

Simi Valley is coming off a 31-19 loss to Golden Valley on Sept. 3. Simi Valley didn't muster much offense in that loss, rushing for only 11 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Jake Maranto threw two touchdown passes, but also threw three interceptions and finished 11 of 33 for 111 yards.

Eric Pinkston scored two of the Simi Valley touchdowns, one on an 89-yard kickoff return.

The Chargers are coming off a last-minute 35-34 win over Ventura. Kyle London caught the game-winning touchdown for Agoura with 1:01 remaining.

While Simi Valley has had two weeks to prepare for its game against Agoura, the Chargers have had only five days to prepare for the Pioneers. It is not the ideal way Wegher wanted to start the Marmonte League season.

"It's not the way I'd prefer it," Wegher said. "I'd rather have another day. Can't afford to have a down night."

The Marmonte League expanded to 10 teams for the 2010 season. Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure joined the league, creating the only 10-team league in the state, and moving the league openers to the second week of the season.

"I anticipate a very tough game," Wegher said. "It should be a hard-fought football game."
