A high school student was hospitalized after being beaten by a group of 10-15 men shouting racial slurs in what police say is a hate crime.

Authorities today were investigating what the sheriff’s department called a racially motivated attack on a black high school student in a Los Angeles Valley College parking lot.

The attack occurred about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Coldwater Extension Parking Lot on the east side of the campus, according to a crime alert issued by the sheriff’s Community College Bureau. The male student attends classes at Ulysses S. Grant High School, adjacent to the Coldwater Canyon Avenue side of the college at Hatteras Street, according to the crime alert.

“He was physically assaulted by a group of approximately 10-15 suspects, described as Armenian, in the Coldwater Extension Parking Lot,” the crime alert said.
