Inaugural Reyes Adobe Days 10K Draws Substantial Turnout

The local race attracted a mixed bag of participants, ranging in age and abilities, and a large, enthusiastic crowd.

Participants in Saturday's Reyes Adobe Days 10K came from cities across the region and included the young and old, the novice and the expert, according to race director Danny Greenberg. The inaugural 10K event kicked off the weekend-long 7th Annual Reyes Adobe Days festival.

“The women outnumbered the men in this race with a 6:4 ratio in a field of over 600 registered participants,” said Greenberg.

The point-to-point, picturesque race from to the Western town at attracted a mostly local crowd with a sprinkling of out-of-towners. Dane Widney from Ohio was one of them, coming in at 19th place over-all.

“Along the course, I saw several residents in their front yards watching and cheering the runners as they zoomed by,” said Greenberg.

The youngest participant was 10-year-old Blake Pokras from Agoura Hills. He came in 26th over-all with a finish time of 44:03. Woodland Hills resident Richard Bublitz, 79, was the oldest participant.

Volunteers from the Oak Park High School girls’ basketball team manned the aid stations along the route and the post-race pancake breakfast. Proceeds from the pancake breakfast will help the team buy new uniforms and gear.

Finishers were shuttled to for pancakes, bagels and other post-race treats, courtesy of , Albertsons and Naked Juice.

“This race is definitely showing great growth and potential,” said Greenberg. “We had a sizable turnout with a crowd two and a half times larger than last year's 5K race and nine times larger than two years ago."

Greg Woodburn, 21, from Ventura, was the over-all winner. Woodburn, who runs for USC, finished in 34:46.

Jerome Vermeulen, 44, from Simi Valley, closely followed Woodburn with a finish time of 35:24. Douglas Close, 27, of Woodland Hills rounded up the top three finishers with a time of 35:59.

In the women’s division, 31-year-old Annalissa Peterson, of Pacific Palisades, crossed the finish line at 39:52. Elizabeth Bojanowski, 50, of Santa Monica, was second place with a finish time of 41:23. Third place winner Nadia Ruiz, 27, of Santa Fe Springs, clocked in at 42:12.
