5 Tips to Help You Prepare for Your Higher Exams

Everyone knows that preparing for an exam, especially a major one, can be utterly nerve-wracking. It’s easy to get confused and overwhelmed. Often, we don’t even know exactly where to begin.

But you have probably established certain methods to help you prepare for your exams in the past. Perhaps you like to listen to music whilst studying, or maybe you prefer to keep everything quiet. You can also choose to study with friends, or you may prefer studying by yourself. Whatever works for you and makes you more comfortable, then do it.

There are also some other things you can do to make your preparation even more effective:

·         Take time and organise your space

Students are notorious for cramming, trying to study everything at the last minute. But cramming isn’t as effective as you may think. Give yourself adequate time to study. Establish a time frame and a schedule, and stick to it. This will train and prepare your mind to absorb as much knowledge as possible when it’s time for you to sit down and study.

Aside from mental preparation, it is also important to prepare the physical space where you are studying. Do you have enough light? Are you in a comfortable chair? Make sure your chair is comfortable, but not too comfortable. Set aside your books and reading materials and arrange them so you can have easy access to each. It is important that you do not get distracted, so keep your games or gadgets out of sight.

·         Engage an audience — speak to others about your answers

Once you have finished studying a chapter or lesson, practice explaining your answers to an audience. Have your parents, friends, or siblings ask you questions pertaining to the lesson and answer them as best as you can, going into detailed explanations when possible. This will help you incorporate things better into your mind, and this will also help you determine what you need to improve on. You can also engage the services of a tutor, who will be a more than willing ally in your quest to ace your exams.

·         Take breaks

Whilst it may be tempting to study throughout the night, you must rest your brain once in a while. It’s a good idea to take breaks every hour or so. Try to see what works for you – some take a 10-minute break every hour, whilst others work better with a 20-minute break every 2 hours. Also, get to know which hours of the day you are the most productive in. Some individuals study better at night, whilst others are most efficient in the morning.

·         Be ready for your exam day

Prepare everything for your exam beforehand, not on the day itself or the night before. Cramming is not recommended. Make sure you have everything you need well before your exam.

·         Get a good sleep and eat well

The night before your exam, make sure you get a good rest. It is essential for you to be alert in the morning. Also, eat some “brain food” before the exam, such as fruit, nuts, and cereal.

Achieving your exam goal is easy if you prepare well. Seek help from a Higher tutor if you feel that you need extra advice, recommendations, and guidance.
