Accused Alameda Priest: Arrest Warrant Issued

Varghese Alengadan did not show up for a scheduled court appearance on Monday, according to a report.

ALAMEDA, CA — A former priest at St. Joseph Basilica in Alameda failed to show up for his arraignment on a sexual battery charge on Monday, and a judge issued an arrest warrant, according to the Bay Area News Group.

Varghese Alengadan, known here as "Father George," was supposed to appear before Judge Colin Bowen in Alameda County Superior Court Monday.

Alengadan is charged with one count of misdemeanor sexual battery. He is accused of inappropriately touching a woman in July of last year.

He has been removed from his position by the Oakland diocese.
