Alameda House Fire Kills Family Pet

Firefighters discovered the body of a large pet dog on the floor in the front bedroom of the house, according to fire a spokesperson.

A pet dog was killed in a residential fire in Alameda late Sunday afternoon, a fire captain said. The fire was reported at 4:17 p.m. at a house in the 200 block of Beach Road. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming through all the windows of the house and threatening two cars and a neighboring house, according to Alameda Fire Capt. James Colburn. The fire was extinguished about half an hour later. No human injuries were reported, but firefighters discovered the body of a large pet dog on the floor in the front bedroom of the house, Colburn said.

“I assume the dog’s cause of death was from the exposure to toxic fumes,” Colburn said. The occupants of the house, including four adults and one child, were displaced by the blaze, Colburn said.

According to Colburn, the house and its contents sustained severe damage, but a dollar estimate was not immediately available. The neighboring house sustained heat damage consisting of broken windows and blistering of paint. The two vehicles sustained significant heat damage to their right sides from the direction of the fire and the melting and deformation of plastic parts, Colburn said. The cause of the fire, which was believed to have started toward the rear of the house, is still under investigation, Colburn said.
