FAAS December 2013 Update

Alameda's Abandoned Pets Need Your Support This Holiday Season

While Santa is visiting homes in Alameda on Christmas morning, more than 70 animals will wake up at the shelter without a family to call their own. Everyone at FAAS, from the Board of Directors and staff to our more than 140 volunteers, is committed to providing the very best care possible for every stray and abandoned pet that arrives on our doorstep, but there’s no substitute for a loving home.

The number of homeless animals has continued to climb this year. We have experienced an increase of 14% in the number of animals coming into our care during 2013.

The generosity of our local community helps us meet the costs for spay/neuter surgery, vaccines, medical care, special diet foods, toys, beds, treats and so much more. But even so, we find our resources stretched painfully thin. Every animal at FAAS is special to us. Each deserves a chance to find a forever home. Our needs are great—theirs are greater.

Please help abandoned pets this holiday season with a tax deductible donation to make sure that the animals in Alameda’s shelter get the very best care they so deserve. Together we can make a difference in their lives. You can make your donation on the new FAAS website at www.alamedaanimalshelter.org, or by sending it to 1590 Fortmann Way, Alameda, CA  94501.

We at FAAS thank you for your support, and for your love of animals. We hope to see you at the shelter—come to witness the small but joyous miracles that occur here this season and throughout the year.

Happy Holidays from everyone at FAAS!

Rescues Make a Difference

One of the reasons we are able to find homes for so many of the animals at the shelter is the good work of the nonprofit rescue organizations in Northern California with which we have developed relationships. These groups help alleviate our overcrowded shelter by taking some of our animals and finding them new homes. So far this year, we transferred more than 210 animals to rescue organizations. Their assistance makes a huge difference in our ability to take in and care for all of Alameda’s abandoned pets.

A few of these organizations take some of our harder-to-adopt pets such as extremely shy cats. Tenth Life Foundation is a San Francisco-based rescue organization working with several Bay Area shelters to place shy and feral cats in supervised outdoor settings like horse stables. This past year, a few of our very shy unadoptable cats were taken by Tenth Life Foundation and transported to stables where they are thriving in their new role as barn cats.

Big Dawgs Rescue is another great group that helped us by taking “Shrimp,” a cute 7-month-old Pit Bull/Mastiff puppy. Shrimp came in as a stray with mange all over his little body. We treated him for a few months until his situation had improved enough for Big Dawgs to take him and continue his care.

FAAS Volunteers Rock!

Every day at FAAS, between 15 and 20 volunteers roll up their sleeves and work alongside paid FAAS staff to clean kennels, walk dogs, socialize cats, stuff Kongs and work in the office. The assistance they provide is essential because FAAS operates with a small staff and budget. Our volunteers are a primary reason we have the ability to maintain the super high quality care we provide the increasing number of animals that come through our doors.  Hooray for FAAS volunteers!!!

New FAAS Website

FAAS is grateful to Jiva Creative for developing a super new look for our website.  They are creative geniuses and have provided us with a website that makes us very proud. Thank you, Gregory and Eric for all your hard work and your patience in working with us to create our website.  You can view it by visiting www.alamedaanimalshelter.org.
