I am a long time Alameda resident and have enjoyed eating at Tomatina for several years as have several of my family members. Recently, it came to my attention that my niece and her boyfriend were treated rather badly over an issue of tipping. Since when was tipping a requirement? Tomatina's manager (Steve) went as far as approaching my niece and her boyfriend one evening and accused them of never tipping the wait staff and informed them that they were never to return to Tomatinas and in front of other customers, escorted them from the resturant. Not only were they extremely embarrassed, but confused of this situation since when they do eat at Tomatinas, they DO TIP! I find the manager's approach disgusting and what has been more disgusting is the horrible attitude of Tomatinas corporate office. They simply brushed off the incident and let Steve off with a reprimand. Given that my niece is white and her boyfriend is African American, it saids to me a case of racial profiling. Anyone eating in the future at Tomatinas should take this into consideration before eating there. While I agree that if you eat out you should tip, tipping is NEVER a requirement, as it is based on the type of service you receive! This is not the first time service issues with Tomatinas has occurred and I their attitude appalling!
