Applications for AUSD Board of Education Now Available

Community members encouraged to apply for vacant seat

The Board of Education for the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) is now accepting applications for the seat vacated by Trish Spencer when she became mayor on December 16, district leaders announced today.

The applications are available on the AUSD website. Hard copies are also available at the front desk of the district’s office at 2060 Challenger Drive, in Alameda. The deadline for submitting the applications is 12:00 noon on January 9, 2015.

According to board policy, when a board member resigns, the remaining board members can choose to fill that seat via appointment or special election. At its public meeting on December 9, 2014, the Board of Education voted unanimously to fill Trish Spencer’s seat via appointment.

Residents of Alameda who are registered to vote and have no criminal record are eligible to apply. The Board of Education will review the applications to make sure applicants meet these minimum legal qualifications and then interview the applicants, in public, at a special board meeting on January 22, 2015. The board will also vote on the new board member at this meeting.

“We encourage any Alameda resident who cares deeply about children, public education, and the well-being of the Alameda community to apply now for this open seat,” says Interim Superintendent Sean McPhetridge, Ed.D. “The Board of Education plays a crucial role in the governance of our school district, and we welcome a diversity of voices and perspectives.”
