2 Hospitalized Following Bear Spray Exposure In Alameda: Fire Officials
Fire officials say they were assessing multiple patients.

ALAMEDA, CA — Two people were hospitalized after being exposed to bear spray in Alameda, authorities said.
Fire crews responded to the 700 block of Santa Clara Avenue regarding a "hazardous materials incident with multiple patients," the Alameda Fire Department said in a statement just before 3 p.m.
A few hours later, authorities identified the "hazardous material" as bear spray, fire officials said.

"The residual substance has been neutralized and residents have been allowed to return home,' the Alameda Fire Department said in a statement Monday afternoon. "Alameda Police is conducting an investigation."
Two people were taken to local hospitals for treatment, city officials said.

Few details about the extent of any patient's injuries. It's also unclear how the people were exposed to the chemical. Bear spray is a non-lethal deterrent that causes intense irritation when exposed to it.
Residents in the immediate area were forced to evacuate their homes following the exposure. Others were told to shelter in place, according to authorities.
