A Bit on the Budget
City staff put together a thorough presentation on General Fund spending for next fiscal year without (ideally) running a deficit. Here is my attempt to digest it all.
Alameda City Council met last night [Tuesday, May 29] to discuss projected budget shortfalls for the general fund and how to prevent running a deficit. This isn't an uncommon problem for cities right now, by any means. And I was impressed at how staff and council kept coming back around to this idea of minimizing the impact of budget cuts on the community. Now this isn't to say we won't feel the pinch as staff numbers drop even while duties increase, maintenance is (even further) deferred, and some fees increase, but it does mean that public services will remain in place mostly unchanged.
I attended the meeting along with a fair number of other Alamedans, to hear what might get chopped. Here are my notes about the proceedings.
