My Favorite Task as AEF President
AEF President Bill Sonneman discusses class pets, happy teachers, and other aspects of AEF's Adopt A Classroom program.
Probably the most enjoyable thing I do as president of the Alameda Education Foundation (AEF) is make Adopt A Classroom presentations. Adopt A Classroom is a program through which community members make $500 donations, 100 percent of which go directly to a classroom teacher or program leader in our public schools. I present these “adoptions” by going to the school site, usually straight into the classroom, and surprise the teacher with the donation.
The teachers are always so appreciative — and I can tell you that on more than one occasion I’ve made them cry. The reaction from the students is also one of appreciation. The younger ones will often stand up and cheer. It’s always fun to ask students how they would spend the money. With the younger crowd, a classroom pet usually tops the list, but they’ll also suggest things like field trips or books. Older students tend to want a class party. But it is up to the teacher on how to use the funds to best benefit the classroom. Although $500 may not seem like a lot of money, it makes a huge impact. Here’s feedback from one recent recipient who is an elementary teacher:

"The money was spent to build my classroom library. I also used the money to buy a reading comprehension kit along with school supplies for the students. This is such an amazing program. I have never heard of it before and I feel so fortunate to have been selected for this. I know as a first year teacher there is much one wishes to buy to enhance curriculum and is unable to because it costs too much money. Thank you for allowing me to build a better classroom for my students. Thank you for placing such an importance on education and helping teachers."
As of January 2012, AEF has made 74 Adopt A Classroom presentations this school year. With two months left in our presentation schedule, we’re well on our way to surpassing last year’s total of 77, but still a ways off from this year’s goal of 100. Donations are often directed, such as from a grandparent to a grandchild’s classroom, but undirected donations are encouraged as well as they allow AEF to help teachers most in need, such as new teachers. I encourage you to visit the AEF web site for more information!
