Off The Grid in Alameda!

Love food? Love gourmet food? Love gourmet food that comes to you on a magic truck? Then you'll LOVE that Off The Grid has finally come to Alameda.

Finally! It was essentially foodie food truck Christmas today at  I couldn't have been happier to hang out with my neighbors on a beautiful sunny day, listen to good music and enjoy a fantastic Cuban breakfast sandwich from Nick's Wheely Good Breakfast truck.

I think most of the island showed up today to sample , and this is truly gourmet food. A number of trucks cook to order — it's not reheated — and it's excellent.

There were long lines for every truck and even longer waits to get your food, but the food is only part of the fun. The whole point of Off The Grid (OTG), besides being able to sample different types of food in one place at one time, is the social aspect of it. If you're in a rush to stuff your face and bolt, this isn't the experience for you.

The purpose is to slow down and hang out with your community while enjoying delicious food. We can (and do) go to restaurants all the time, which is great, but this is a different experience worth checking out if you've not yet had the opportunity.

While waiting to order my Cuban from Nick's I met some great people and had a lovely conversation. I'm sure I'll see them at the next OTG and I look forward to meeting more of our Alameda neighbors at future events.

For the folks that haven't yet ventured to an OTG, don't knock it 'til you've tried it. As I told my neighbor Evelyn, Five Ten Burger is absolutely the best burger I've ever had and the cupcakes from CupKates are amazing. Sadly, she was sold out by 12:30!

I look forward to sampling other trucks when they come back. Suzie Q's Lunch Box line looked like the very longest and she quickly sold out of just about everything. I'll be starting there first next time. Thank you, City of Alameda for making it possible.
