Shelter Honored in "Beast of Bay" Awards
FAAS honor by Bay Woof readers...clever pooch removes his cast...and more news from the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter.

Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter(FAAS) won two important acknowledgements from readers of Bay Woof, a well-respected voice of the Bay Area dog community. Dog-loving voters selected FAAS in two important categories in the publication’s annual Beast of the Bay awards -- 4th runner-up in “Best Thing to Happen To Dogs in 2012” for keeping the shelter open and thriving and 4th runner-up in “Best Dog Athletic Event” for our first-ever 2012 Wiggle Waggle Walk. We are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts on behalf of all companion animals in Alameda.
The tale of Buddy’s broken leg
FAAS received a report in February from several citizens who told us that a dog was running in the streets with a possible broken leg. Animal Control and police officers finally managed to catch the dog and brought him to the shelter to be cared for by us.

Our veterinarian confirmed that the dog did have a broken leg so a cast was put on along with an Elizabethan collar so he couldn’t chew the cast. When we came in the next morning, the dog had carefully removed the cast --all in one piece! A new cast was put on with a bigger collar on the dog, and the next morning he had done the same amazing feat.
We moved the dog into our administration offices where we could keep a closer eye on him, and crated him at night. We quickly found out that he knew how to get out of crates, open doors and take off whatever type of cast put on him. We were all charmed by this very smart dog who we named Buddy (aka Houdini). His leg did finally heal, and Buddy now awaits his forever home with someone who needs to be smarter than he is!!

Angel Fund needs support
Shelter animals like Buddy depend on the Angel Fund for critical medical care to make them healthy and adoptable. The Angel Fund is made possible by caring contributions from the community.
FAAS has had several stray animals that needed emergency care and the Angel Fund is sadly depleted. Please consider a gift to the Angel Fund today to help save more animals lives. Donations can be made online at the FAAS website: www.alamedaanimalshelter.org (add Angel Fund in the Paypal comments section) or by sending a check to 1590 Fortmann Way, Alameda, CA 94501 ATTN: Angel Fund.
One great event
If you didn’t make it to Applebee’s for the Tip-A-Cop event in mid-February, you missed a great time for a great cause. FAAS sends a very big thank you to Police Chief Mike Noonan, Captain Paul Rolleri, Lieutenant Jill Ottaviano and several members of the Alameda Police Department for spending an evening waiting and bussing tables to raise money for the abandoned shelter animals. They all did a fantastic job as wait staff and they raised $1,958 for the animals.

Pet Loss Support Group
FAAS hosts a free Pet Loss Support Group on the third Wednesday of each month for anyone who wants a safe and comfortable place to grieve the passing of a beloved pet. The Support Group is facilitated by Jill Goodfriend, LCSW who leads similar groups in other parts of the East Bay. Jill provides information on grieving and offers a compassionate environment for people to share their stories of their pets. The next Pet Loss Support Group will be held on from 6:30 to 8 p.m.Wednesday, March 20 and it is free. Please call Jill at (510)393-1359 for more information or to sign up.
