The Breeders: We've Gone Mobile!
No, I'm not referring to smartphones, but an immediate need to get serious about baby proofing. Wait, actually I am referring to smartphones...

We have officially entered a new stage of parenting. As of Sunday, The Kid is crawling.
Okay, he is still a little wobbly, and he is much quicker with the military crawl than on his knees, but he is definitely on the move.

He's been threatening to crawl for a while, pushing up into planks that would impress the most experienced yogi, rocking back and forth on his knees, and generally getting his bearings from a new altitude, but it wasn't until we gave him some incentive that he started moving.
The incentive? Daddy's iPhone.

We're trying to stick to the American Academy of Pediatrics' guideline of no screens before two, so its not like The Kid is looking to play Angry Birds or watch cats on YouTube, but those square blocks with pretty pictures sure seem to be Mommy and Daddy's favorite toys, so they must be super fun!
That's why we spent Sunday night putting the phone — and when he really got going, mommy's computer — about two feet in front of him. Any closer and he could use his mastery of wiggling and stretching. Any farther and the carpet, , the shadows on the wall ... became very interesting.
Of course, another one of the things they don't really explain in the baby books is that babies are mobile long before they can actually crawl. Rolling, scooting, wiggling and stretching can get you a lot of places. So we've already done some baby proofing, like outlet covers, but now that The Kid can cover some ground its time to get down to business — and learn not to leave our smart phones lying around where he can call Reykjavik or tweet something embarrassing.
