Bystanders Save Alameda Police Officer From Burning Car

After being struck by a hit-and-run driver, the officer was briefly trapped in the patrol car and the front end of the vehicle caught fire.

ALAMEDA, CA - An Alameda police officer was injured and a 19-year-old man was arrested after a collision between their vehicles on Tuesday night, a police lieutenant said.

Emmith Delrosario, an Alameda resident, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run following a collision that occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fifth Street and Lincoln Avenue, police Lt. Hosh Durani said.

Officer Russell Wise was in a patrol vehicle at the intersection when a driver in a speeding vehicle tried to turn and struck the officer's car, Durani said.

Wise was briefly trapped in the patrol car and the front end of the vehicle caught fire. He was able to escape with the help of bystanders and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Durani said.

The driver of the other vehicle fled, leaving behind a female passenger in the car.

The driver, later identified as Delrosario, was eventually taken into custody and was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Durani. He has since been released from the hospital and booked into Santa Rita Jail, Durani said.
