Coast Guard Q&A: How Many People Live in Coast Guard Housing?
Alameda is one of more than a dozen designated "Coast Guard Cities" — communities that are closely intertwined with a local Coast Guard base. Petty Officer 2nd Class Levi Read answers Alameda Patch reader questions.
How many people live in Coast Guard housing?
For security reasons we do not give an exact number people who live in the housing complex. However, there are 300 Coast Guard units in Alameda. There are 3- and 4-bedroom townhouses as well as 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom duplexes. The Coast Guard housing complex is located near the old Navy Base at Alameda Point.
There are also San Francisco Bay Area housing complexes located in Concord and Novato.

Coast Guard housing, which was formerly Navy housing in Alameda, is now home to families of Coast Guard enlisted and officer members stationed at units in Coast Guard Island and nearby Coast Guard units in the Bay Area.
More than 4,000 Coast Guard members call the Bay Area home while serving aboard cutters, small boat stations, air stations and training centers. Due to the high mobility of military careers, housing entitlement is available to members and their families who rotate through a typical 2- to 4-year tours of duty, offsetting the burden of having to search for a place to live in a high-cost real estate area.

The Coast Guard took over management of the property from the Navy when they departed the site in mid-1997.
