OAKLAND, CA — An Alameda County sheriff's deputy was injured Wednesday morning near Oakland International Airport, a sheriff's spokesman said.

The deputy was injured in a traffic crash at about 7:30 a.m. on Ron Cowan Parkway as he was in his vehicle responding to a separate crash, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

"It looks like he'll be okay," Kelly said of the deputy.

A K-9 in the vehicle also appears it's going to be okay. The dog was checked out by a veterinarian, Kelly said.

The deputy was stopped on the side of the parkway after responding to a crash when the driver of another vehicle was apparently driving too fast and lost control of their vehicle.

The vehicle hit the deputy's vehicle causing all the airbags in the deputy's vehicle to deploy.

Kelly said the deputy complained of pain to a hand, blurred vision and burns from the airbag deployment.

The deputy was taken to a hospital and has been released.

Kelly said neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have played a role in the crash.

Kelly said California has a law that requires drivers to slow down and move over a lane when approaching an emergency or towing vehicle on a road.

"That's designed to protect first responders," he said.
