East Bay Toddler Killed In I-880 Shooting

The California Highway Patrol believes the boy was hit by a stray bullet.

OAKLAND, CA — A toddler was shot and killed while riding in a car on Interstate Highway 880 through Oakland Saturday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol. The child was rushed to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, where he died.

The Bay Area News Group reports that the child was identified by his family as Jasper Wu of Fremont, who would have turned 2-years-old later this month.

Northbound lanes of the highway were shut down for hours as officers searched for evidence. CHP investigators report that the shooting happened on the northbound side of the freeway, while the child was riding in a car going southbound.

The shooting was reported around 2:10 p.m. near Filbert Street.
