ALAMEDA, CA — Caltrans is scheduled to begin repaving and making other improvements to Encinal Avenue (SR-61) between Broadway and Sherman Street in Alameda in June, providing motorists with a smoother ride, and enhancing safety for pedestrians and wheelchair users.
In addition to repaving, the work includes upgrading existing curb ramps, enhancing crosswalk markings, upgrading signals with accessible pedestrian signals and installing vehicle speed feedback signs. This project will also incorporate Complete Streets elements, which includes the conversion of the existing two through lanes to one through lane in each direction, a center two-way left-turn lane, two Class II bicycle lanes, and parking within the project limits.

The work is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2023. The work will start at the Encinal Avenue/Broadway intersection and move north along Encinal Avenue.
Caltrans will make every effort to minimize inconvenience as the project moves along. Traffic advisories, social media and signage will be utilized. We thank the traveling public for your patience as we work to enhance the Bay Area’s highways, bridges and tunnels.
