Essential Warehouse Management Tips

With money being scarce most retailers and merchants are looking for ways to cut costs and increase productivity. One of the ways that you can do this is by effectively managing your warehouse and improving your management systems.  The warehouse plays such a huge role in the overall health of the business it’s important to get it working well so that it does cause negative effects throughout the company.

Improve the Organisation

Any warehouse will not operate to its full capacity if it isn’t organised well. You need to have systems in place that make it very easy for the workers to store and pick the goods based upon what the products are, their sizes, colours or any other factors. You need to think about where to locate the goods inside so that the systems can work efficiently. Work on your slotting plans and if you have slow movers it’s a good idea to have them removed from picking zones to provide more space.  If you put excellent slotting plans into action you can reduce the time it takes for your workers to pick goods and save a lot of wasted time.

Managing Your Labour

In order to get the most from your workers it’s a good idea to provide incentives. Provide a safe and well organised work place and give your workers a reason not to slack off. The more they can pick and pack in one day the higher their rewards will be. You should also be prepared to help people develop their skills. Encourage self-improvement and provide training that will benefit the company and the individuals. If you are a motivated employer you will have motivated employees that are willing to go to extra trouble to hit targets and get the job done.

Make Use of Technology

Computerised systems can really speed up the processes and help you to spot problems early on. You should be using as much of the latest technology as possible. Use visual management systems such as large tracking screens installed on the warehouse floor to speed up processes. However, encourage your supervisors and managers to get down into the warehouse frequently and provide an open line of communication for the workers to bring up issues and ideas freely.

Health and Safety in the Warehouse

One of the most important areas to concentrate on in a warehouse is health and safety. You need to provide a working environment that is clean, tidy and where the risks are managed through risk assessments and safe working methods. Train up your employees so they know how to handle goods without risking injury and train them how to use the equipment. You should also be prepared to provide protective clothing and gear such as steel toe capped shoes and back supports.

You will need to provide equipment that is of good quality and well maintained. Everything from the fork lift trucks to the warehouse steps must be appropriate for the jobs they are being used for and only used by those who have the skills and the qualifications to use them.
