Miss Representation

At Girls Incorportated of the Island City, we encourage girls to develop the critical-thinking skills they need to navigate through the media's messages they encounter through different sources.  We believe that girls have the right to be themselves and to resist gender stereotypes and interweave media literacy education into all our programs.  For this reason, in connection with Girls Incorporated of the Island City's Blueprint Program, we are presenting the revolutionary film, Miss Representation, to the Alameda community.

Miss Representation, a documentary film that has been written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, exposes how mainstrem media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America.  The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for them to achieve leadership positions and for the average women to feel powerful herself.  The film accumulates startling facts and statistics that leave audiences shaken, armed with a new perspective, and asking the question, "What can we do?" about the issue.  The film will have its broadcast premiere on OWN Oprah Winfrey Network in the fall.

Girls Inc. is part of the solution and so are YOU!  We encourage you to support us and participate in the event.
