FAAS SAVED 132 PET LIVES IN JUNE!

Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS) had its most successful month ever in June with 132 animals adopted, sent to rescue, or returned to their owners.  Several factors account for our success:

1.    Kitten Season (April – August) started later than normal and then just exploded with more kittens than we have seen in a very long time.  To celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month, FAAS held a free adoption weekend on June 28-30th and found new homes for lots of our pets --mostly kittens!

2.    The Maddie’s Adoption event in June was a resounding success with 47 of our shelter pets going to new forever homes.

3.    Our partnerships with local rescue groups are increasing, so we were able to transfer a record 36 dogs and cats to wonderful organizations that are dedicated to helping shelters like ours find homes for abandoned animals.

We wish we could say that after this past month our shelter is empty, but that’s not the case.  Because of the kitten explosion and an increase overall in the number of homeless pets in Alameda, FAAS is full -- with more animals coming in every day.

We could use your help as we struggle to keep up with all the care that these stray and abandoned animals need.  If you’re looking for a new pet, please adopt from FAAS.  If you can make a donation to help us care for the pets while they await their new forever homes, please visit our website at www.alamedaanimalshelter.org and click on the donate button.  If you’d like to volunteer, please contact the FAAS Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer.faas@gmail.com

Wiggle Waggle Walk:  June 15th was the perfect day for our second annual Wiggle Waggle Walk. More than 100 people and their dogs enjoyed a festive occasion that raised over $15,000 for the homeless pets of Alameda.  Very special thanks go to the dedicated volunteers who helped make Wiggle Waggle Walk successful, and to the event sponsors who underwrote all the costs:  Providence Veterinary Hospital and Clinic,  MBH Architects, Kelly Lux agent – State Farm Insurance Companies, Under One Woof, Alameda Business Network, Alameda Marina, Berg Injury Lawyers, Bill Botts Mirror Finish Auto Detailing, Churchward Pub, Harbor Bay Club Associates, Harbor Bay Realty, JD’s Pet Care, Nancy Evans of Harbor Bay Realty and Voluncheer.com.

Eddie’s New Life:  Eddie came into the shelter as a stray missing a large portion of hair over his shoulders. At first, we thought it was a chemical burn so he was immediately taken to a veterinarian. A skin biopsy revealed that Eddie has a rare genetic condition causing him to be born without hair follicles in the shoulder area.  FAAS volunteers and staff fell in love with this little Shiba Inu/Pomeranian mix because he is quite the character and is a very sweet little dog.  Many people visited Eddie but ended up not adopting him because of his bare shoulders.  But a mom and her teenage daughter kept coming back to visit him and were smitten by his charming ways.  One day they brought their little dog into meet Eddie, and the two were instant best friends.  Eddie has now gone home with his new best friend, and two wonderful humans who are happily buying t-shirts to protect his skin from sunburn.  We are happy to report Eddie is in a great new home and receiving all the love he deserves.

Save The Date:  Our third annual After The Ball fundraiser will be held on Friday, September 27th at Rock Wall Winery.  There are many new features to this year’s event, including a VIP reception from 6 to 7 p.m., and a gala evening from 7 to 9:30 p.m. that includes trapeze artists, stilt walkers, lots of great food and wine!
