Fairyland-Themed Exhibit At Oakland Airport

OAKLAND, CA — A new art installation celebrating Oakland's historic Children's Fairyland theme park will be opened to greet passengers at Oakland International Airport on Tuesday.

After a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m., the exhibit will become available for viewing adjacent to security checkpoint in Terminal 1. No security clearances will be required to visit the Fairyland-themed installation.

Children's Fairyland opened its doors by Lake Merritt on Sept. 2, 1950 and became the United States' first storybook theme park. When Walt Disney toured amusement parks that year seeking inspiration for what ended up being Disneyland, he visited Fairyland and hired some of its staff.

Following budget cuts in 1978 and years of despair thereafter, Fairyland gained nonprofit status in 1994 and turned things around. The park has focused on affordability and safety since then, introducing a program that waives its $12 admission fee for 4,000 low-income children each year.
