Free Gift Cards, Shopping Bags At Alameda Grand Opening

ALAMEDA, CA — Alameda is getting a new supermarket and you have the chance to score some sweet loot, including free groceries for a year. Grocery Outlet Bargain Market will hold a grand opening ceremony at 8:55 a.m. this Thursday, Sept. 20. The first 200 customers will receive Grocery Outlet Bargain Bucks in "mystery" amounts ranging from $5 to $200. All shoppers will receive a free reusable bag, while supplies last.

And the sweetest prize of all is the chance to win a free groceries for one year, valued at $1,200. You may enter to win the grand prize between Sept. 20 and Oct. 18.

Furthermore, a donation will be presented on behalf of Grocery Outlet to Alameda Food Bank Thursday at 11 a.m. The donation will equal the amount that shoppers saved on their grocery purchases during the store’s first hour of operation.

If you're not familiar with the chain, Grocery Outlet is the fastest growing, extreme-value grocer in the U.S., with over 300 locations in California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Washington. The store offers savings on brand name products of 40 to 70 percent compared to conventional retailers, according to the company, which is based in Emeryville.

But Grocery Outlet carries a full range of products including fresh produce, meat, deli and dairy. They also offer a large selection of beer and wine, health and beauty care products, and seasonal items.

Although part of a chain, Grocery Outlet stores are independently owned and operated. Alameda's owners are Rita and Elie Zgheib.

If you can't make the grand opening, a community celebration will be held this Sunday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will include giveaways and activities for the whole family including an obstacle course, mechanical bull and mechanical surfboard.
