Frugal Family: Dragon Boats, Shorts, Free Delivery
Your guide to thrifty tips, tricks and tools on the Island and beyond

Shorts Season: I actually appreciate the fact that Kohl's offers discount upon discount upon discount for name-brand items. I also appreciate the fact that they don't really pay attention to the Bay Area's seasons. Case in point: they now have boys' and teens' shorts and T-shirts (including those made by Van's and ZooYork) on sale (like up to 80 percent off) — despite the fact that our hottest days can be in September and October. Stock up now for the warm weather yet to come.
Bangle Magic: Boring bangles, begone. For a mere $5 donation, you can learn how to make a crochet cover for your bangles at Modern Mouse on Thursday, Aug. 11. Bring your own supplies (including a crochet hook and embroidery thread) or use the ones provided. No crocheting experience needed. Just RSVP so they know how many people are coming: 510-814-8830. 5-7 pm.
Dragon Boating: You know you want a new sport and you're longing to do it with others. Dragon boating might be just the ticket! Each boat holds 20 paddlers — plus a drummer. Alameda's own team, the Dragon Flyers, offers three free introductory sessions. Then, if you decide you like it, it's $120 for the entire season (which includes three practices a week plus competitions). Interested? Head out to the parking lot next to the boat ramp at 2400 Mariner Square Drive tonight, Wednesday, and ask for Nancy, Karen or Carol. Or call 510-521-7555.

Free Legal Help: Do you know about the lawyers from the Alameda County Bar Association who help residents the first Wednesday of every month? Just go to the library between 6 and 8 p.m. and ask the reference librarian to put you on the list. More details available at 510-747-7713.
Free dog food delivery? Pet owners still mourning the loss of Pets.com, which used to deliver pet food and other supplies, should be thrilled to know that the new pet store in town — Run, Spot, Run — is taking delivery orders. A minimum purchase of $30 is required, but the delivery itself is free.
