ALAMEDA, CA — The new Grocery Outlet Bargain Market opened in Alameda on Thursday, and as part of its "Unlock the Savings" celebration, the store donated $2,487.13 to Alameda Food Bank. The donation equals the amount that shoppers saved on their grocery purchases during the new store’s first hour of operation. The check was presented by Rita and Elie Zgheib, the store's independent owner-operators.

"We are thrilled to open a Grocery Outlet here in Alameda and bring our community a simple way to save money on their groceries," said Rita and Elie. "The partnership with Grocery Outlet allows us to be true entrepreneurs, create new jobs and have a positive impact on the neighborhood." The store hired 35 employees.

Grocery Outlet offers name brands at prices 40-70 percent less than traditional supermarkets. Its buyers purchase excess inventory and seasonal closeouts. In addition, Grocery Outlet has fresh produce, meat, dairy and deli selections, and frozen food.
