Gunfire Erupts At Shopping Center In East Bay, Injuring Good Samaritan: Police

ALAMEDA, CA — A Good Samaritan was shot Saturday at an Alameda shopping center after intervening in an attempted robbery, police said.

Officers responded around 1:15 p.m. to reported gunfire in the parking lot of the South Shore Center in Alameda, according to police.

A victim had been approached by a person who demanded their property, police said, and when the victim refused, a struggle ensued, and the Good Samaritan attempted to assist.

During the struggle, the Good Samaritan was shot in the leg, according to police. The Good Samaritan suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to a hospital, as was the would-be robber, who was arrested, police said. The initial victim was treated and released at the scene, according to police.

"We take incidents like this extremely seriously. Acts of violence are unwelcome in the City of Alameda," Chief Nishant Joshi said in a police department social media post about the incident. "Our officers and investigators will continue working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.”
