Job Hunting Tips: What Employers Seek in Prospective Employees

In the present tight job market, you need something to make you stand out from many others who are clamoring for work. Whether you are seeking employment for the first time or have been experiencing frustration in an ongoing search, here are some things to be aware of that employers look for in prospective employees.

Clarity

Your resume is the first thing many prospective employers see. It should clearly emphasize your skills, talents and ability to handle responsibility. Go over it phrase by phrase and be sure it bursts with honest, optimistic confidence. Detail in writing why your competence sets you apart from the crowd. Sum up your qualities in a paragraph of two or three sentences that highlights your unique professional brand. You should take the same care to create a thorough presentation of yourself on your LinkedIn and Twitter profiles as well. Complete all profile sections, and if possible add correlating documents, references, photographs, and audio and video presentations. Remember that anyone can search the Internet to learn more about you, and keep your online presence completely clean and open to scrutiny.

Affinity

Do not shoot job applications and resumes wildly in every direct. Instead, focus your search. Target organizations you admire with which you feel an affinity. Research companies you are interested in and get to know their culture and the way they work. Follow them on Twitter. Take advantage of networking opportunities at professional seminars and trade shows. Engage in social networking on Twitter and LinkedIn Groups.

Precision

Once you have determined where to direct your job search, do not send generic copies of your resume. Tailor it for every position to which you apply. Study the specific job description and demonstrate how your achievements, experience and education meet its requirements. Show your industry acumen with the language you use. Make it clear that you are addressing your prospective employer specifically and personally.

Expertise

One way to demonstrate your expertise is to write authoritative blogs that impact the industry in which you are interested. Producing a blog or blogs and updating them regularly shows creativity, diligence, knowledge, technological expertise, self-editing skills and extraordinary interest in the field of your prospective employment. Blogs on general business and financial topics demonstrate your depth of knowledge and research abilities. You can find an example of a blog on business policy here. Though you may feel you do not have time to write, consider that blog content is an important part of today's business world. Schedule yourself some time to write, and concentrate on topics relevant to the industry of your choice.

Determination

Frustrations may mount as savings dwindle in this difficult job market, but do not settle for a job for which you are not suited. A mismatch does not benefit either you or your employer and will only result in another job search down the road. Instead, keep your eyes on the ultimate goal. When you do get an appointment to meet face to face, remember the basics of a job interview. First of all, never be late, or even on time. Demonstrate your responsibility to plan for unforeseen circumstances by arriving early. In addition, a job interview is not the time to demonstrate your humility. Instead, you should show confidence in your abilities and expertise and be bold in detailing how your talents will help the organization to which you are applying. Finally, remember that the interview is an opportunity to find out if you and the company are a good fit, so be sure to ask about any concerns you have.

If you conduct your job search wisely, with your eyes open, your research complete, your tools ready and your goals clearly defined, you have a much greater chance of success.
