Last of Free 'Concerts at the Cove' Music Series in Alameda on Friday

One of the sure signs of summer in Alameda is the announcement of the headliners for the free, family friendly Concerts at the Cove music series co-produced by the Rotary Club of Alameda and the East Bay Regional Park District.

The Crab Cove Visitors Center hosts the three concert series held on the second Friday in June, July, and August.
The 15th season will conclude on August 8th when two KFOG Local Scene bands headline the final concert.

Robin Applewood and friends take the stage beginning at 5:30 p.m.. Robin’s songs tell the tale of love and the struggles of everyday living tempered by an “everything’s gonna be alright” attitude delivered through a healthy mixture of rock, funk, and soul. The result is an upbeat sound that has wide appeal.

The Bay Area based quartet The Orange Peels, an indie-pop and rock band, just finished a nationwide tour and will perform songs from their critically acclaimed album “Sun Moon” beginning at 6:30 p.m.. Their single “Aether Tide” was included on KFOG’s Local Scene 10 CD and rumor has it The Peels will debut their latest single “9” at the concert.

For those that attend any of the performances, the Concerts at the Cove music series is a great community activity that brings neighbors, friends, and families to Crab Cove - one of the Park District’s crown jewels for an evening of music, picnics, and an opportunity to support local restaurants (Calafia and Café Jolie), wineries (R & B, Rosenblum, and Rock Wall), and Alameda’s first brewery – Faction Brewing. And, there is more.

For the Alameda-based non-profit organizations that receive grants from the Alameda Rotary Community Grants Program, Concerts at the Cove is the economic engine that generated over $14,000 in 2013. Through the sales of beer and wine and the contribution of many sponsors like the Regional Parks Foundation and Alameda Landing, community groups including the Boys & Girls Club, Girls Inc., and the Alameda Educational Foundation along with Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter and Altarena Playhouse have received funds that enable these organizations to deliver benefits to community members - both
two and four legged.

Concerts at the Cove is also one the most visible demonstrations of the Rotary motto – Service Above Self. The Rotary Club of Alameda is part of Rotary International, a service organization with 1.2 M members in 34,000 clubs across 200 countries. Members of the Alameda club come together to produce Concerts and realize a common goal of giving back to the community through leadership, dedication, and commitment. In addition to community grants, the Alameda Rotary Club works on numerous programs like scholarships to local high school students and contributing to world community
service projects to provide clean water and sustainable agriculture. Through the efforts of Rotarians around the world, polio no longer exists in India and all of Southeast Asia.

The Rotary Club of Alameda meets every Tuesday at Grand View Pavilion for lunch, fellowship, networking, and to hear an interesting speaker. The one hour formal meeting and program begins at 12:30, and club members start gathering at noon.
