SF Giants Trade Robbie Ray, Luis Arraez Ahead Of Deadline

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Some notable names are missing from the San Francisco Giants roster after the trade deadline.

The Major League Baseball trade deadline ended at 3 p.m. But whether the Giants made any major splashes may take some time to pan out.

The Giants, boasting a 47-65 record that has them third to last in the Wild Card rankings, traded left-handed hitter Luiz Arraez and right-handed reliever Caleb Killian to the Philadelphia Phillies in return for two prospects: Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair.

That trade was followed by the Giants offloading left-hander and former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray to division rivals San Diego Padres.

In return, the San Diego Padres sent right-hander Miguel Mendez (No. 4 prospect in the Padres organization) and Joniel Hernandez (San Diego's No. 9 prospect) to the Giants.

Arraez was the team's most consistent hitter, with a batting average of .324 and an on-base percentage of .360. Ray, meanwhile, led the teams in wins and earned run average, and Killian led in saves.

Amongst those still on the roster are slugger Rafael Devers, who was rumoured to join the San Diego Padres hours before the deadline.

A San Francisco Giants playoff push at this point in the season is unlikely. The team currently has less than 0.1% chance to make the playoffs, according to Baseball Reference.

But the addition of players such as Marquez and Gair bolsters a Giants farm system that has been short on pitching depth this year, according to MLB.
