Man Injured, Dog Killed in Hit-and-Run on Fruitvale Avenue

BREAKING: The victim is in critical condition. Police said the driver returned to the scene.

OAKLAND, CA – A man was critically injured and his dog was killed after a vehicle hit them while they were in a crosswalk in Oakland's Fruitvale district on Tuesday night, police said.

The man and his dog were struck by a vehicle in the 2900 block of Fruitvale Avenue, near Nicol Avenue, around 8:15 p.m., according to police.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he is listed in critical but stable condition, but his dog didn't survive its injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police described the collision as a hit-and-run because the driver left the scene. However, the driver later returned to the scene and is cooperating with authorities, police said.

Alcohol wasn't considered a factor in the collision, according to police.
