As 291,000 sq ft of retail space gets developed at Alameda Landing, across the street Marina Village retail spaces go to auction. I know my post sound crabby and it's not my intention to be that guy. I just don't understand why added another 292,000 sq ft of retail space on an island of 70,000 people.
Shoreline hasn't been able to lease their spaces and lost the restaurant in the center and Pearls which was very popular.
Blanding can't lease their space and recently lost a tenant with game stop
Marina Village retail space now goes to auction
New retail on Park st at Buena Vista vacant
The Lincoln/Park street plans (Good Chevy dealership) has been flattened to make more retail space as well. While the city and developers may preach sales tax revenue the reality is that no business=no revenue and as my dad and many old timers say "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" and it just seems that we have a bunch of overgrown bushes now with no birds. This is a great article about how the City lost revenue by pushing existing/successful business out and from what I can tell are trying to over compensate by going as big as they can.

The thing about Alameda is we were built to ship out not ship in and we are a small business oriented town. Always have been. Those who made millions in business during the growth of the island didn't make money here unless it related to infrastructure or building homes/communities and then small businesses supported those communities and were able to have long and prosperous runs. So as I see this rush to expand and push big box retail to our small little island we are just not set up for it nor will it be convenient for others to get to which is why the Marina Village retail space is up for Auction.. even with 30 office buildings, a Marina, home developments, etc. It cannot hold tenants and most importantly attract tenant for both office and retail.
