Meet APD's Newest K9 Team

Watch for Dexter and his human around town.

ALAMEDA, CA — Alameda Police have a new K9 Unit: Officer Zaragoza and his dog "Dexter"are working the swing shift. They started patrolling two weeks ago. Officer Zaragoza and Dexter have already helped take an armed robbery suspect with a loaded gun off the street.

Before beginning their patrol assignments, the pair went through a rigorous canine handler course and passed a certification process.

"This ensures they meet the requirements set forth by the California P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training)," APD reports. "After the team is certified, they will then complete weekly training sessions and annual certifications to ensure the team maintains their skills."
