Nea CLC to Host Series of Girls Leadership Workshops

Alameda, CA – October 6, 2015 — For over ten years, Girls Leadership has awakened thousands of girls to a new, bold definition of leadership. A national nonprofit co-founded by author, educator and coach, Rachel Simmons, Girls Leadership believes that leadership begins in girlhood.

“Our workshops help girls become young women with integrity, self-awareness and personal authority,” said Simmons. “It’s about knowing yourself – how you feel, what you think and what you need, and the ability to act on who you are in your relationships,” Simmons said.

Nea Community Learning Center, located at 1900 Third Street in Alameda, will host the series of three parent/guardian and daughter workshops, targeted towards particular grade levels. Each workshop is 60 -120 minutes long (depending on grade level), and held once weekly, for four weeks. The workshops are open to the public, but limited to the first 15 adult/girl pairs that register. Costs for the workshops range from $180 – $280 per participant pair, with scholarships available (visit www.girlsleadership.org/scholarships for details).

The first workshop offered, “Say What You Feel, Ask for What You Need” is for girls in 4th-and 5th-grade with a parent, and takes place on four Tuesdays: November 10, 17, December 1 and 8, from 6 pm – 7:30 pm. The curriculum includes: Assertive Self Expression, Emotional Intelligence at Home, Owning our Mistakes, and Road Map for Conflict. Cost for this session is $210 per pair. The second workshop, “Tools for Sunny & Cloudy Days with Friends” for Kindergarten and 1st-grade girls and a parent, will take place on four consecutive Tuesdays: January 26, and February 2, 9 and 16, from 5 pm – 6 pm. The curriculum covers: Friendship Toolbox, Sharing Feelings and Body Language, Mistakes – We All Make ‘Em, and Courageous Friendships. Cost for this session runs $180 per pair. The final workshop, titled “Be Who You Are, Say What You Mean” is for middle-school girls (grades 6, 7 and 8) and parents, and runs on four consecutive Wednesdays: January 27, February 3, 10 and 17, from 6 pm – 8 pm.
