ALAMEDA, CA — The Polar Plunge & 5K returns to Alameda for its second year.

This year's event will take place on Saturday, March 21, at Crown Memorial Beach, and will again help raise funds for Special Olympics athletes, according to the Alameda Police Department.

"Grab your shoes (or flippers), bring your friends, and come support our Special Olympics athletes," the Alameda Police Department said. "Bonus points for the most creative costume!"

The event is as it sounds — run a 5K (3.1 miles) and then take a cold plunge at the beach.

The Alameda Police Department reached its $1,000 fundraising goal last year after promising that if the amount was met, Chief of Police Nishant Joshi would also dive into the water.

It's unclear if that will be the case again this year. But the Alameda Police Department has upped its fundraising goal to $2,000. They've raised $150 as of Monday morning.

"Your donation helps provide opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to experience the joy and empowerment of sports," the organizers of the police fundraiser said. "Let’s make a splash together and show our community spirit!"
