Port of Oakland Traffic Drops 5 Percent in February
Port officials blame two factors for the year-over-year drop.
OAKLAND, CA — Exports at the Port of Oakland declined slightly last month compared to the same period a year ago, largely due to inclement weather and the Lunar New Year, according to port officials.
Exports dropped 1.2 percent last month compared to Feb. 2016 and overall activity - both imports and exports - dropped 5.1 percent, port officials said in a statement Friday.
Bad weather in the U.S. interior slowed the shipment of goods to Asia. The Port also blames a drop in imports on the Lunar New Year celebrations when many Asian factories shut down for the holiday. However, the Lunar New Year fell on Feb. 8 last year, so last year's numbers would have been equally impacted.
