San Leandro Sideshow Lands Driver In Jail

The driver is from Grass Valley, hours away from here in the Sierra foothills.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — San Leandro Police arrested a driver participating in a sideshow at a marina parking lot Tuesday night. Andrew Robles-Lara, 22, of Grass Valley, was arrested on suspicion of driving recklessly and endangering others. His BMW was impounded for up to 30 days.

Police received several calls Tuesday around 5 p.m. about drivers spinning donuts in the parking lot. Officers arrived a few minutes later, but the cars had already stopped.

Officers remained in the area and at 6:45 p.m., while parked in the lot in marked police vehicles, they saw a white, 1988 BMW 325i begin to spin donuts in the middle of the parking lot, filling the air with smoke from the burning, rear tires. Someone associated with the vehicle stood nearby video-recording the reckless driving.

Officers stopped the BMW and arrested the driver, Robles-Lara.

“Unfortunately, many sideshow participants don’t recognize that their actions endanger others. In (this) incident, we are lucky that the driver didn’t lose control of his car and harm anyone,” stated Lt. Robert McManus. “We thank those that called us...as we rely on our residents and visitors to help us stop crimes that affect our community.”
