Returning part of the Seaplane Lagoon shoreline to nature is one of the biggest changes that has emerged in the planning process at Alameda Point.
The draft Town Center and Waterfront Precise Plan for the Seaplane Lagoon and eastern entrance area, presented to the Planning Board on August 21, offers a number of new concepts. One concept is to move a previously proposed marina from the west side of the lagoon to the east side. This will allow for a non-commercialized western shore.
The naturalizing of the western side of the lagoon, along with removal of buildings there, would link the nearby Runway Wetland on the Nature Reserve with the Seaplane Lagoon. According to the city’s staff report on the plan, the western waterfront edge would feature “wildlife habitat and passive recreation with limited access.”
