Suicidal Man Talked From Ledge Of Bay Bridge

BAY AREA — A man peacefully surrendered to the California Highway Patrol this afternoon on the eastern span of the Bay Bridge after swinging his legs over the edge of the bridge as if to jump.

A pedestrian was reported walking toward Treasure Island on the shoulder of the westbound Bay Bridge around 12:30 p.m. An officer responded and gave him commands, but the man walked away and pointed a large stick at him. The officer followed at a safe distance and waited for backup, according to the CHP.

When additional units arrived, the distraught man walked to the edge of the bridge and swung his legs over the edge. The man was unresponsive at first, but officers talked him into peacefully surrendering.

All of the officers on scene had undergone crisis intervention training, according to the CHP.

No injuries were reported, and the man has been taken in for a mental health evaluation.
