Sun, Cycle, Work — with a Bagel and Coffee

Thursday's Bike to Work Day brought record numbers to the five "Energizer Stations" on the Island.

That was the head count at the where cyclists could stop by, say "hi" and grab a cup of coffee, a bagel and a goodie bag before heading out on their way to work.

"It was definitely a success," said 's Lucy Gigli, who was at the rest stop outside on Park Street Thursday morning. "We have lots of bicyclists out, lots of people going all over the place."

There was a line of cyclists on the bike path down Central Avenue, certainly more than usual.

"We got lucky it was a nice sunny day, more people tend to be out on nice days," Gigli said. "And the number of riders is definitely increasing. But we still have lots of people not being out there."

Studies show, says Gigli, that the more cyclists there are, the more comfortable and safe everyone feels. "The more people who are out there biking and walking, the more other people will get out and do it," she said. "People also respond to bike lanes and bike paths and that feeling of safety."
