The Clothes Line

Women's consignment clothing shop relocates to Park Street.

Owner: Maggie Cunningham

When did the store open? I was on Santa Clara (upstairs from ) for about three months before moving over to Park Street. We opened here on December 21, 2011.

What do you carry? We have women’s clothing from sizes 2 to 14 — everything from high-end items like Christian Dior sandals that are brand new to Old Navy and everything in between. We have dresses, shoes, bags, accessories — a little bit of vintage, a little bit of retro. Just a good mixture.

How do you choose the items you carry? What catches my eye is something unusual. I tend to gravitate towards that sort of thing as well as clothes that are good quality and fashionable.

I go through and make sure the clothes are clean and in good condition. I accept them when I think they will sell and when they do, we have a fifty-fifty split.

How did you choose the name, The Clothes Line? We were brainstorming one night when we came up with the name. Now it’s a fight to remember who came up with The Clothes Line — my daughter Nicci or her husband.

"Clothes line" can have more than one meaning, right? When I was growing up in the U.K., most people would hang their clothes out to dry. I don’t have a clothes line now, but my daughter does. On a nice day like this, you want to hang your clothes out to dry. In decorating the shop, I went for that look with the clothes line and pegs. But the name also means a line of clothes as well.

What do you enjoy about the shop? I love to spend time with people and help them put things together. I’ve had customers come in and say, “Help, I don’t have a clue!” and I love to help them.

What do you think of Alameda? I love Alameda. I’ve been coming here for quite a while because my daughter lives here. So I got to know before moving here. I’ve lived all over the world, and I think it’s just the best place. Alameda gives you that support that comes from being in a small town where people do know each other.

The Clothes Line is located at 1407½ Park Street. Telephone: 522-5200 Business Hours: Tuesday-Wednesday 11-6, Thursday-Saturday 11-7, and Sunday 12-5.
