Weapons, Ammo, Magazines Seized From Resident Suffering 'Episode'

Alameda Police officers responded to a disturbance on Monday. This is what the resident had in their home.

ALAMEDA, CA — Alameda Police officers seized weapons, ammunition and magazines from a resident following a disturbance Monday in the 700 block of Central Avenue that was deemed a mental health issue.

Police were told that a resident suffering an "episode" was causing a disturbance. Responding officers were already familiar with the person. The officers used their Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training to deescalate the situation.

The resident is getting "required help," according to police.

Following the interaction, officers did a safety sweep and found evidence of weapons in the residence.At that point, APD officers obtained a search warrant from a judge. When it was served, the weapons, magazines, and ammunition were "collected for safe keeping."

Upon questioning by a member of the public, APD reports, "Any firearm taken for safe keeping by law enforcement is subject to review by the CA Department of Justice (CADOJ). If the CADOJ deems the individual can lawfully own these weapons, they will give him a gun release letter which he can give to APD. Upon receiving this CADOJ letter, APD will release the firearms back to the registered owner."

According to APD, all officers who interact with the public have received CIT training, with some 95 percent of all sworn employees CIT trained.
