Albany Coronavirus Cases; Another Death In Alameda County

As the county inches slowly toward reopening, the number of cases continues to grow.

ALBANY, CA — Another person has died of coronavirus in Alameda County, health officials announced on Thursday. The death toll in the county now stands at 94 since the outset of the coronavirus pandemic. Statewide, the death toll is closing in on 4,000, according to Johns Hopkins University. Thursday afternoon, it was 3,934.

Here in Albany, the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus is still fewer than 10. The communities with the highest number of cases in Alameda County:

  1. Oakland: 1093
  2. Hayward: 585
  3. Eden Area: 202
  4. Fremont: 160
  5. San Leandro: 149

Alameda County has the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases, surpassing Santa Clara County to the south, which recorded the first known death from the virus. In Contra Costa County, residents express frustration over the slow pace of reopening, but cases continue to climb there, as well.

In other developments, with substantial ridership and sales tax revenue losses due to coronavirus, BART's current projected fiscal year 2020-2021 budget includes more than $100 million in cuts while avoiding layoffs and furloughs, BART officials said Thursday.

The U.S. Census Bureau is starting to reopen some of its field offices in California in order to reach homes without regular mailing addresses, census officials reported this week. One East Bay office is reopening, in Concord.
